UK EORI After Brexit
Following Brexit on January 31, 2020 (with transition ending December 31, 2020), the United Kingdom now operates its own EORI system separate from the European Union. This has significant implications for businesses trading between the UK and EU.
Two Types of UK EORI
The UK now issues two distinct types of EORI numbers:
- GB EORI: For businesses in England, Scotland, and Wales trading with countries outside the UK
- XI EORI: For Northern Ireland businesses under the Windsor Framework (successor to the Northern Ireland Protocol)
GB EORI vs XI EORI: Understanding the Difference

UK EORI Number Format
UK EORI numbers follow a consistent format based on VAT registration:

GBXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (assigned by HMRC)XI EORI Format: XI + 12 digits

For VAT-registered businesses, the EORI typically consists of the VAT number (9 digits) followed by "000" to make 12 digits after GB/XI.
