Validate an EORI number
Step by step validation using the EU EORI database, plus what to do when a number returns not found.
What validation confirms
EORI validation checks whether an EORI number exists in the EU EORI database and whether it is returned as a valid identifier. It does not confirm ownership, good standing, or the ability to use the number for a specific procedure.
| Input | EORI number (two letter country code + identifier) |
|---|---|
| Output | Valid or not found (based on EU database response) |
| Best use | Pre check before filing customs declarations or onboarding partners |
How to validate (practical steps)
- Check the country code is correct (two letters at the start).
- Remove spaces and punctuation unless your issuing authority explicitly includes them.
- Run validation through the EU service.
- If a number is not found, confirm with the operator and re check after issuance activation.
Official validator: EU EORI validation service.
Common reasons a number is not found
- Recently issued numbers can take time to appear in the EU database.
- Wrong country code or transposed characters.
- Using a VAT number that is not the EORI string in that country.
- Entity mismatch (subsidiary vs parent) where different identifiers exist.
If you need an EORI urgently
If a filing deadline is close, contact the operator that owns the EORI and the relevant customs authority. In many cases, customs can confirm issuance status even if the EU database is not updated yet.
