Common EORI errors
The failure modes that cause EORI validation issues and customs declaration rejections.
Format errors
- Wrong country code at the start of the EORI.
- Spaces, punctuation, or mixed characters copied from emails or PDFs.
- Transposed digits or missing characters.
- Using a VAT number that is not the issued EORI string in that country.
Validation errors
A not found result often indicates a formatting problem or a timing issue after issuance.
- Re check without spaces and with the correct country code.
- Confirm with the operator which legal entity owns the EORI.
- Re check after customs confirms issuance if the database update is delayed.
Declaration errors
- Using the consignee EORI where declarant EORI is required.
- Mixing exporter and importer roles across documents.
- Using an EORI that belongs to a different group company.
Customs declarations can fail validation when the operator role does not match the declaration field.
